The Mets are another man down in the rotation, as Shaun Marcum is getting season-ending surgery.
Mets pitcher Shaun Marcum will have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.Carlos Torres will take Marcum's spot in the rotation until Jonathon Niese returns from a shoulder injury.
Torres, 30, has an ERA of 0.66 in 13-2/3 innings pitched, all of which came out of the bullpen. The Mets will use a four-man rotation until the All-Star Break, though Torres could start in place of Matt Harvey on Saturday.
Marcum is suffering from thoracic outlet syndrome, which causes numbness and coldness in the hand. Mets assistant general manger John Ricco told Rubin that it was affecting Marcum's ability to grip the ball.
The right-handed pitcher had the option to go the rehab route, but instead elected to go for season-ending surgery. For a pitcher who has had many injuries in the past, another setback comes as no surprise.
Mets pitcher Dillon Gee underwent the same procedure in 2012, and others such as Kenny Rogers, Jeremy Bonderman and Chris Carpenter have had similar injuries.
